Mudbox is a pure sculping application created by Skymatter. It is excellently for organic modelling but can be used for non-organic modelling, too.

The models can be edited in the central perspective, where you can rotate, zoom in/out and move them freely. Different toolsets can be used to edit the model in any kind. Therefore you can change the settings of every tool separately. Additionally you can lay alphatextures over your mesh and use different brushes to transfer the pattern of the texture onto your object (tracing).

Mudbox 3D saves the meshes into it's own data format (.mud). By using the export function it is possible, to save the edited mesh as .obj or .bio.

A Mac version is in progress and will be released soon. At the moment Mudbox is available for Windows only. A Demo version can be ordered at the Mudbox homepage.

Features V 1.0.4

  1. Sculpting of polygon-meshes
  2. Limited to 100 millions of polygons, but most sculpts are done in range of 2 millions polygons
  3. Editing meshes by using different 3D-toolkits
  4. Layerbased Editing (compareable to Photoshop)
  5. Export of displacement- and normalmaps
  6. Export of poygon-meshes (squared polygons) on different levels
  7. Use of masks and selections (freeze, fade in/out and erasing polygons)
  8. Integrated Pictureviewer for stamppattern, alphamaps and modellingpattern

Workflow

Using Cinema 4D for exporting a low-poly-mesh and saving it as an .obj file. This file can be easily opened in Mudbox.
Using the subdividing shortcut (similar to the Cinema 4D Hypernurbs)the mesh will get smoother. The mesh can
also be subdivided into different levels by using selections, so it is possible to get a well-balanced mesh. The more you
subdivide it, the more details you get.

The work-progress can be managed bye using the layersystem, for expample the first layer is used to edit the mesh
in a raw way, the second layer deals with the fine structures. These layers can be blended, turned visible/invisible,
be fixed as you know it from Photoshop. The non-commercial version of Mudbox is restricted to 5 layers.

After the mesh is edited well, you can export the mesh itself by selecting a subdivided level of the object (the higher
the subdivided level is, the more diffcult it gets to edit the mesh in Cinema 4D afterwards). Mudbox offers also an
export for displacement-, and normalmaps. By using the menue you can change the resolution of the maps and the details
which are calculated by 2 different levels of the edited mesh and its quality.

Those textures can be loaded into Cinema 4D by using the materialmanager and the right channel for the map.

Versions

The recent version of Mudbox is 1.0.4
There are two different versions available. The basisversion for non-commercial use and the professional version.
